    Air Swivels

Side Inlet – Air Swivel (Flushing Head) is a drilling tool attached to the top of the drill pipe, primarily used for “reverse circulation” applications. Coinciding reverse circulation (RC) pipe and/or tubing are connected with a compressor or pump to allow circulation of drilling mud, air or water.

A Flushing Head works by allowing the drill pipe to rotate freely while the side hose remains stationary. In reverse circulation applications, an Air Swivel allows the cuttings to be flushed upward into the pipe at the same time allowing cuttings to return through a customizable port through which compressed air is blown.

Air Swivel (Flushing Head) drilling tools may be customized to accommodate threaded splined or flanged upper and lower connections, allowing connection to any pin or box to meet specific application requirements. We specialize in construction drilling tools and custom drilling tools.

    Casing

Whether you need casing to prevent contamination of well zones, prevent unstable upper formations from caving in on your bore hole, a strong upper foundation to continue drilling deeper or a smooth internal bore for installing production equipment, Western Drilling Tools can supply casing drilling equipment for any of your drilling needs. We specialize in construction industry drilling tools and custom drilling tools.

In typical use, casing strengthens the sides of the well hole and prevents contamination of the drill string. It also provides a hollow smooth bore for lowering production systems or to be used in conjunction with casing advancement systems. Down Hole casing also provides a path for fluids, cuttings and mud to travel back up the hole. It is also extremely common for casing to be cemented into the hole. Our casing can be used as well casing, casing strings, surface casing, intermediate casing and for casing advancement.

    Typical Casing

Casing Joints typically come in lengths of 6m, 9m or 12m but we can tailor casing to any length you require. The casing connectors are usually pin x pin (male x male) and connected by short a coupler which is box x box (female x female). We also manufacture casing which is made from one piece with the threads cut directly into casing ends. This style of casing has the pin and box ends cut directly into the tubing and has time saving and cost advantages. We also manufacture casing designed to be re-used. We do this by welding the threaded connectors to the ends.

Most Down hole casing range in size from 4.5 inches (11.43 cm) to 20 inches (50.80 cm) outside diameter (“OD”) and is made from various grads of steel including J-55 , L80 , mild carbon steel, cold drawn steel carbon steel, A53 Grade A line pipe, 4130 and P-110.

Typical Casing Threads that we cut include:

    • HUGHES H-90
    • Improved Buttress
    • Krupp

    Core Drilling Tools

Whether you are collecting a core sample for an oil sands project, an environmental drilling application or for geotechnical drilling, Western Drilling Tools has the core drilling supplies to maximize your drilling efficiency. Western Drilling’s machine shop manufactures any coring system or core drilling tool you may require including conventional, wire-line, diamond and custom drilling tools.

To collect a core sample from any ground formation you need a competent line of coring equipment. Western Drilling Tools has been designing, supplying and manufacturing coring tools since 2004 and is proud to provide Calgary AB drilling tools. When core drilling, the objective is to obtain a core sample which can then be analysed at a later time. To do this you need a core drilling tool system that can retrieve the sample and allow you to continue drilling. The Western Drilling Quad Latch Coring Tool system is of premium quality and is compatible and interchangeable with all other Quad Latch Systems.

The Quad Latch coring system consists of many components which can be categorized into a few main assemblies including the Quad Latch Head, Inner Tube Assembly, Over Shot and Bearing Assembly. Western Drilling Tools supplies these parts as a complete core drilling tool system, by assembly or by individual parts. The Quad latch wireline coring system is suited for 4-5/8 CP Pipe and threads. The core sample typically retrieved by this system is 2.75″.

Exploration drilling is used in the mining industry to probe the contents of known deposits and identify potential sites. To collect a core sample the core drilling system must contain a core barrel. There are three types of core barrels; single tube, double tube and triple tube. Wire line core equipment also comes in pipe sizes which include N with a drilled hole size of 75.7mm, H with a drilled hole size of 96mm, P with a drilled hole size of 122.6mm, B with a drilled hole size of 60mm, and A with a drilled hole size of 48mm. Our standard core barrels come in 10 foot sections. With our coring tools, a continuous core can be removed without the worry of having the sample eroded by flushing.

Core samples are collected through a core tube. As you drill the core it slides into the core barrel. The Overshot attached to the end of the wire line is lowered inside the outer tube and locks on to the Latch Head Assembly, located on the top end of the core barrel. The winch is retracted which pulls the inner tube to the surface. The basket catcher prevents the core from coming out of the core barrel during retraction.

    Core Pipe

At Western Drilling Tools, we believe your drilling products should be constructed from the best materials available in a cost effective manner without sacrificing quality. We are experts at manufacturing core drill pipe. The drill pipe is precision machined from extremely tough 4140 L80 steel for the pipe shafts and the connector ends are made from 4140 HT or QT100; this makes them extremely durable, wear resistant and reusable. The core pipe connector ends are then press fit or threaded to the drill pipe and welded to the pipe tube under the strictest quality assurance. What this process assures your core pipe is both premium quality and low price.

Western Drilling Tools’ core pipe is available with an outside diameter of 4-1/2”, 4-5/8, 5”, 5-½ and 7-5/8 O.D. The standard connector thread WDT use’s for its core drill pipe is 4-5/8 CP thread. The standard length of the core drill pipe is generally 6m-9m long.

    Cross Over Subs

Cross over subs act as an intermediary between two dissimilar threads and are used to connect the two. A cross over sub can also be used to protect other tooling in your drill string and since the cross over sub (also known as saver sub) is the least expensive item in the drill string it can be designed to wear before any other drilling component does. A cross over sub can be used just above the bit or in a reverse circulation application to deliver outgoing air to the bit face. In these applications a cross over sub is usually called a bit sub. Often times cross over subs will be phosphated to thread together easier. In addition, all of the WDT cross over subs can have wrench flats milled into them to allow for better assembly and disassembly.

    • Pin (male) x Box (female)
    • Pin (male) x Pin (male)
    • Box (female) x Box (female)

The length of crossover subs is generally measured from shoulder to shoulder.

Typical lengths range from 6” – 28” long going up in increments of 2 inches.

Western Drilling Tools can cut nearly any non-patented thread. Some of the threads commonly cut include, but are not limited to:

    • API IF 2″ – 5 1/2″
    • API REG 2 3/8″ – 8 5/8″
    • API FULL HOLE 2 7/8″ – 6 5/8″

    Deck Bushing

    Deck Bushing – Bearing Style

Western Drilling’s Rotary Deck Bushings are manufactured in our machine shop to extremely high precision. This ensures that you get extremely smooth rotation. The ball bearing style deck bushings come either with sealed ,which do not need to be lubricated, or open bearings with a convenient grease nipple to apply lubricating grease as needed.

These deck bushings are mainly used in mining applications when drilling blast holes. The WDT bearing style deck bushings come with 3 bearing races. The center bore makes contact with your drill stem while the outside is held stationary by the drilling table or deck. Western Drilling’s deck bushings have been reported to substantially increase the life of the drill string and reduce maintenance down time.

Deck Bushing – Wear Sleeve Style
Western Drilling Tools also manufactures a wear sleeve style deck bushing which is very similar to the friction bushings supplied by many drilling manufacturers. A focus on precision machining and high quality materials are used to deliver Western Drilling’s high standard of exceptional drilling equipment.

    Discharge Heads

Discharge heads, also called discharge swivels and flushing heads, are mounted to the top of the drill rig and allow a path for cuttings to be evacuated. Western Drilling Tools offers two styles of discharge heads: rotating bearing and sealed rubber rotating.

Discharge heads are generally built to divert cuttings and hole contents at the surface, they can be used in series with air swivels or independently for percussion drilling and rotary drilling. The rotary style discharge head allows for circulation and rotation at the same time.

The bearing-style discharge head allows the casing or drill pipe to rotate smoothly while allowing the discharge nozzel to remain stationary. The Western Drilling Tools discharge head can be custom manufactured to accomodate many sizes of pipe. These discharge heads can be built to a maximum OD of 30” in (762mm). Both styles of discharge heads seal with a thick rubber system and the rubber rotating discharge head allows the drill pipe to spin the rubbers with friction. The discharge head is bolted to to the drill string and can be adapted to fit any drill pipe.

  • Rotating Discharge Head

A rotating discharge head has a similar function to a non rotating discharge head except, that it uses a rotating ball bearing component which attaches to the drill for smoother rotation and better pr...

    DHT Hammers

When percussion or hammer drilling the percussion mechanism is called a DTH or down the hole hammer. This drilling tool is located directly above the down hole hammer bit. The driller transfers weight to the bit through the drill pipe as well as provides some rotation. Through the use of a compressor, the pressurized air is forced to the down hole hammer. As the drilled hole gets deeper the driller adds more drill pipe to the string. The piston strikes the impact zone of the hammer bit; hammers are always used as part of a casing advancement system and can be used in reverse circulation applications. DTH hammers are common when drilling blast holes and water wells.

Since the down hole hammer piston impacts the hammer bit directly there is a very efficient transmission of energy. This means that the impact energy does not have to pass through many other components making it possible to drill fairly deep holes.

Western Drilling Tools can easily provide all of your down hole tools including custom down hole hammers, percussion drilling tools, hammer drilling tools and more. WDT carries and distributes many major names in the down hole tools industry including Drill King, Rock More plus many others. There have been excellent advances in air flow technology which allows today’s hammers to deliver more force to the down hole tools than ever before; this enables the piston to hit harder and more frequently. In some instances it becomes difficult to hammer drill when you are under a large column of water. Fortunately, all of Western Drilling’s DTH hammers come with adjustable chokes which greatly affect the performance of down hole tools. Another drilling supply that Western Drilling Tools has helped to develop is a blow back sub which can be mounted above the down hole hammer. When drilling under water, if it becomes to difficult to push the water, the blow back sub will allow some air to escape thereby lowering the average density of the surrounding water and allowing the down hole hammer to continue operating.

    Hammer Bits

Western Drilling Tools’ Hammer Bits or DTH Button Bits range in size from 4″ hole diameter upwards (101.6mm) to 24” (609.6mm). Western Drilling stocks and supply’s DTH Hammers for all major DTH Hammer brands and shanks.

When percussion or hammer drilling your choice of hammer bit is just as important as your choice of down hole hammer. DTH stands for “down the hole”. When hammer drilling, the hammer bit gets its energy from repetitive striking of a pneumatic down hole hammers piston. This hammering with slow rotation drives the hammer bit gradually through ground formations. DTH hammer bits are most commonly used in percussion rotary air blast drilling, mining blast holes, and mineral exploration and water well drilling industries.

The cutting interface of the DTH hammer bits are loaded with high quality tungsten carbide, which is an extremely hard material. Since hammer bits work with air pressure delivered to the down hole hammer, it is important to use the recommended pressure provided when hammer drilling. Down hole hammer bits come with a wide variety of carbide styles. The sharper the point, the softer formation it is used for. The different styles of carbides on the hammer face include dome, cone and ballistic tungsten carbide inserts which are press fit into the DTH bit.

Western Drilling Tools can open up the flushing holes to provide hammer bits that can be used in reverse circulation drilling. Custom Hammer Bits, Flat Faced Hammer Bits, Convex Hammer Bits, Drop Center Hammer Bits, Concave Hammer Bits, and all kinds of exceptional custom drilling tools are offered at Western Drilling Tools.

Hammer Bits Come in Four Main Styles:

    1.) Flat Faced Hammer Bit

These hammer bits are excellent for drilling in medium to hard formations. These hammer bits maintain average hole straightness but have an excellent penetration rate.

    2.) Convex Hammer Bit

Medium to hard ground formations are no problem for this DTH Hammer Bit. The DTH bit keeps average hole straightness but drills at an excellent speed.

    3.) Drop Center Hammer Bit

These DTH Hammer Bits are great for drilling through medium to hard formations. Drop Center Hammer Bits have excellent hole straightness with an average drilling rate of penetration.

    4.) Concave Hammer Bit

Concave Hammer bits are ideal for drilling through medium to hard formations. These DTH hammer bits are known to keep an extremely straight hole with an average rate of penetration.

Hollow Bit Method for Slot Recovery

New Method to Remove Old Conductor Casing

Current methods of removing conductor casing involve either milling all the old casing except old 30” Conductor. Once the inner casing sections are milled the old often rusty and environmentally unstable conductor casing is used to drill a new well.

Alternatively, all the casing above the sea bed including the old conductor is cut and removed. Then using deflecting tool such as a whip stock a new well is drilled. This creates problems such as stacking and other close proximity problems that could result in costly and unwanted collisions.

There is a new method, the hollow bit technology allows you to Cut all casing below the conductor shoe and drill all cement around the old conductor and pull the old casing in sections and replace the old.

How Does The Hollow Bit Technique Help?
Old conductors in the sea bed are rusty, old and corroding. The removal and milling of this casing causes unwanted pollution on the sea floor. Current methods are costly and create potential collision problems due to the close spacing of the conductor casing being set at sea bed surface.
The Hollow bit method will reduce the time required to remove old conductor casing by a minimum of 10 days and by as much as 20 days. This will save significant amounts of money and time as well as reduce the potential for unwanted collisions. The process is easy and can be implemented quickly.

The benefits of this technology are as follows:

1.) This technology is faster and less costly than any other method worldwide.
2.) This technology has full scalability and will work with any size casing, production, intermediate or conductor.
3.) Since the existing casing acts as a guide for the tooling, there was no need for a dive team.
This means that this method is less dependent on weather and more versatile then other methods.
4.) The Spetco WDT Hollow Bit method works for both centralized and non-centralized holes and allows slot recovery for every case including the center slot of a 9 slot well which would be impossible by other methods and technologies.
5.) For slots with centralized intermediate casing sections, The casing can be removed without disturbing the conductor casing. By leaving the existing conductor casing in place, This allows you to use the existing casing infrastructure and supporting cement. This saves tremendous time not having to recover and replace it.
6.) Simplified tooling. There are less moving parts, simple tools and no need for Gyro’s
7.) Significant improvement in terms of personnel safety
8.) Environmental benefits include no new foot print on the sea floor and the existing casing infrastructure is re used or re-purposed. Unlike other methods there is no need for an increased number of underground conductor casings.

    Kelly Cock

A Kelly Cock valve is a ball style check valve, it is a piece of drilling equipment used to prevent blowout. Western Drilling Tools has been designing, machining and testing Kelly Cocks for years. The Kelly Cock is a manually operated ball valve and requires a wrench that is also manufactured in Western Drilling’s machine shop. The Kelly Cock is located above or below the Kelly but can be located anywhere above the drill pipe and used in the drill string to prevent flow up in emergencies. The primary function of the Kelly Cock Valve is as a safety system. Another common use for a Kelly Cock is to prevent the loss of mud while tripping or making connections.

The WDT Kelly Cock Valve is easy to operate and pressure tested to 2500PSI. As a standard, Western Drilling can build and certify its Kelly Cock Valves up to 10,000 PSI (6.8 MPA). Each Kelly Valve is pressure tested and certified. Precision machining and excellent quality control set WDT Kelly Cock Valves apart from the rest. All of the components and parts are manufactured out of North American steel and all machining is done in Canada.

WDT Kelly Cock Valves range in size from 4” OD to 14” OD. API IF. The most common size is for a 4-5/8 CP thread. Western Drilling Tools can customize the Kelly Cock Valves to thread into the following joints. Kelly Cock Valve pressure testing, Custom Kelly Cock Valves, as well as Custom Drilling Tools are also offered.

    Reverse Circulation

Reverse circulation drilling is similar to air core drilling. The cuttings are returned to the surface through an inner tube and collected for later use. This type of drilling is done by either rotary drilling or percussion drilling with the aid of a down hole hammer. Reverse circulation drilling is a highly utilized drilling method for mineral exploration. RC is used to retrieve continuous samples from the ground where a solid core is not needed.

In RC drilling, air, or sometimes water, is pumped into a side inlet air swivel. The air is then blown down the outside of the pipe. Once the air hits the drill bit, it flushes and cools the air but also creates a vacuum that forces the air and cuttings up the center of the drill string and into the inner tube. The air then goes back up the drill pipe through the top drive and into a cyclone sampler. Western Drilling Tools manufactures all of its own RC equipment. The RC equipment is compatible with most others on the market.

A major advantage of reverse circulation drilling is continuous uncontaminated samples.

Western Drilling Tools also manufactures a complete line of rc tools and accessories. Feel free to contact WDT for more information on RC drilling, custom rc drilling tools and custom drilling tools.

WDT drilling supplies include a multitude of products for sonic drilling rigs. Sonic drilling works by vibrating the drill string at incredibly high frequencies (over 50 Hz ). Once the resonant frequency is reached the procedure begins. This intense vibration causes the drilling tools to expand and contract, most sonic rigs are manually tuned by the driller to the required frequency. The equipment is capable of drilling up to 100m, 3 to 5 times faster than conventional drilling without the use of mud or other lubricants. Western Drilling Tools supplies the drilling components required to complete the hole.

Western Drilling Tools supplies a magnitude of drilling supplies for sonic applications including sonic drill pipe. This is heavy wall drill pipe with large deep threads that can withstand the forces associated with sonic drilling. Western Drilling manufactures sonic pipe with its own style WDT sonic threads; drill pipe from 3.5 to 6-5/8 sonic thread sizes are available.

Western Drilling Tools also builds sonic bits in its machine shop. These bits are built from tough, high alloy steel with press fit tungsten carbide inserts. Multiple styles of sonic bits and tools are built. The WDT sonic bit helps drill at high speeds and can be used for overburden drilling, it will work in most drilling environments and through most formations. The WDT sonic drill bit maintains an incredibly high rate of penetration while obtaining large undisturbed core samples.

Western Drilling Tools manufactures sonic pipe clamps with interchangeable inserts for sonic rigs. The design is tough and easy to operate in the field. All of the tools are built to high quality and at a considerable cost savings compared to the competition. Western Drilling offers various items such as sonic drill tools and pipe equipment, sonic pipe clamps and all kinds of custom drilling equipment.
